Why is Birth Certificate Apostille Required?

A birth certificate is a primary document identifying your nationality, age, and parentage details. When applying for foreign education, dependent visa applications, global employment, or residence permits, member states of the Hague Convention require this certificate to bear an Apostille stamp to verify its legitimacy.

Procedure for Birth Certificate Apostille

The process depends on whether it is a state-level or SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) legalization route:

• Notary Attestation: Initial stamping on a photocopy of the original document.
• SDM or Home Department: The state government verifies the birth registry record.
• MEA Stamping: The Ministry of External Affairs places the final unique Apostille sticker behind the certificate.

Documents Required

• Original Birth Certificate.
• Clear passport copy of the child/applicant (Front and Back).
• Passport copies of parents (if requested by the MEA for minors).
